Matthew Tkachuk is set to join the Florida Panthers on their upcoming six-game road trip, with a potential season debut in sight. The forward, who underwent surgery in August to repair a torn adductor and sports hernia, has been making steady progress in his recovery. Tkachuk has been practicing with the team while wearing a yellow non-contact jersey and has been skating on his own for at least a couple of weeks. He's aiming for a return to the lineup during this trip, but he's keeping the target date under wraps.
"Every box that has had to be checked so far has been, and the last one before playing is taking off the no-contact jersey," Tkachuk said. "We'll have a few more skates and a couple of calls, and figure it out from there. We're feeling pretty good right now."
Tkachuk's return is particularly significant given the Panthers' current situation. The team has been without several key players all season, including captain Aleksander Barkov, defenseman Dmitry Kulikov, and now defenseman Seth Jones. Despite these setbacks, the Panthers have managed to stay in the playoff mix, thanks in part to the efforts of Tkachuk's teammates.
"I don't look at it like they're treading water," Tkachuk said. "I think they've played some amazing hockey. It's hard to do with so many guys out of the lineup, and the depth has been tested. And they have passed the test, I think. What they've been able to do has been very impressive."
Tkachuk's focus is primarily on the Panthers, but he can't help but think about the opportunity to represent USA Hockey at the Milan Cortina Olympics next month. "We need every point we can right now, and I'm a Florida Panther," he said. "And for two and a half or three weeks, I'll be on another team. And I'm not going to lie, I'm pretty excited for that as well."
The Panthers' upcoming trip includes games in Toronto, Montreal, Ottawa, Buffalo, Carolina, and Washington. Tkachuk's return could be a significant boost for the team as they look to make a push for the playoffs. With his experience and skill, he could help fill the void left by the injured players and give the Panthers a much-needed boost in their pursuit of another Stanley Cup.
