Chevy Chase Documentary: Director Shares Shocking Interview Moment (2026)

Imagine sitting across from a legendary comedian, only to be bluntly told you’re not bright enough to understand them. That’s exactly what happened to Marina Zenovich, the director behind the explosive new documentary I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not. But here’s where it gets controversial: Zenovich didn’t just brush off the insult—she turned it into the centerpiece of her film, sparking a conversation about Chevy Chase’s notorious reputation and the challenges of documenting a figure as polarizing as him.

During their very first interview for the CNN-streamed documentary, Zenovich innocently remarked, ‘I’m just trying to figure you out.’ Chase, now 82, fired back with a bluntness that left her stunned: ‘No s--t. It’s not going to be easy for you. You’re not bright enough. How’s that?’ This tense exchange became the flashpoint of the film, though Chase himself doubted Zenovich would include it. ‘Of course I kept it in,’ she told Obsessed: The Podcast host Matt Wilstein. ‘I knew I had to address his reputation for being, well, difficult.’

Zenovich, no stranger to tackling complex subjects—her previous documentaries include deep dives into the lives of Roman Polanski, Lance Armstrong, and Richard Pryor—admitted she was nervous. ‘It was only our second meeting, and I had no idea if I’d be thrown out of his house,’ she recalled. Yet, she pressed on, driven by the unpredictability of her work. ‘Part of the thrill is never knowing what’s going to happen,’ she explained. ‘He was rude, but I think he was just being himself. And I was just doing my job.’

The documentary, which premieres on HBO Max on January 31, sheds light on Chase’s tumultuous career and personal life. And this is the part most people miss: Despite his iconic roles in Caddyshack, Fletch, and the National Lampoon’s Vacation series, very few of Chase’s peers were willing to participate in the film. SNL creator Lorne Michaels and original cast member Dan Aykroyd were notable exceptions, but no one from Community, Chase’s cult-favorite sitcom, agreed to appear—except director Jay Chandrasekhar.

Chase’s time on Community was cut short when he was fired mid-season by showrunner Dan Harmon. The reason? Allegations of using a racial slur during a heated argument with co-star Yvette Nicole Brown. The incident, which involved a joke about a Black-face hand puppet operated by Chase’s character, ended with Chase storming off set in what Chandrasekhar described as a ‘full meltdown.’ Chase refused to address the incident in the documentary, leaving viewers to piece together the story from others’ accounts.

Brown, for her part, has been vocal about her discomfort with the situation, though she declined to participate in the film. ‘These are things I’ve never spoken of publicly and perhaps never will,’ she posted on Instagram. Zenovich expressed surprise at Brown’s public comments, noting she had reached out during filming. ‘She didn’t want to talk to me, and I respect that,’ Zenovich said. ‘You’re limited by who’s willing to engage and how deep they’re willing to go. It’s a constant dig, and you never know if it’ll pay off. That’s part of the fun.’

Here’s the bold question: Does Chevy Chase’s talent excuse his behavior, or is his legacy tarnished beyond repair? The documentary doesn’t provide easy answers, but it invites viewers to grapple with the complexities of separating art from artist. As Zenovich puts it, ‘It’s not about judging him—it’s about understanding him.’
